Update 13 July 2008 Phil Neale recently contacted me with details about a colour photograph of 9466 taken a Barry in 1968. This is the first colour picture that we have seen and was taken by Tom Curtis. We are very grateful for permission to reproduce the picture on this site and thank both Tom and Phil. Update 14 September 2004 John Dunlop recently got in touch about the Barry pictures as follows:- I recently came across the 9466 web site and I have to say that the locomotive looks magnificent. I can help with the controversy concerning the photograph of 9466 taken at Barry docks. I actually took a photograph of the locomotive in Barry in 1967 and you will see, in the shot, 5668 directly behind. Hence this confirms that your photograph was actually taken in Barry docks, not Radyr. I trust that this helps. We would like to thank John very much for this information and permission to reproduce his photograph below. Copyright for this picture remains with John Dunlop. Update 14 August 2004 Graham Ruddock recently got in touch about the above pictures. He has managed to provide a wealth of information that includes confirmation that the "Radyr" picture above was definately taken at Barryas follows:- You ask for help about the photograph of 9466 possibly taken at Radyr (it was not), but first some corrected information on its arrival at Barry. Sold to Woodhams - 24/8/64. Not at Barry - 30/8/64 (Visit list). Present at Barry - 17/10/64 (Confirmed 18/10/64) (Visit lists). Given the sale date and the information above, the actual arrival date was almost certainly 9/64, but I have no copies of visit lists from September or early October to confirm this. Soon after arrival (confirmed by 1/65 but probably earlier) the loco was against the buffer stops (boiler towards the stops) at the head of a short line of 7 locos in the top yard. Immediately behind it was 5668, facing the same way as 9466. The full line was: stops <9466 <5668 <6686 4247> 5322> <6634 7325>. The < or > symbols indicate the smokebox end of the loco. The loco was still in this position in summer 1968 but was moved to the main yard, along with all of the other engines in this line, in autumn 1968 (confirmed by October). This move was part of the shunt to remove non-ferrous parts from the locos and most locos were moved at this time. 9466 was then at the Barry Island end of the main yard, scrapyard side, second line in, still with 5668 behind it. It remained on this same track until March 1975 (at least) but had been shunted out and then put back again by July 1970 in a shunt to remove 5322, which was behind it, for preservation. Arrival Date at Barry. The 1965 arrival date you have for 9466 probably results from 9466 (and the rest of the line) being missed by many visitors in late 1964 and early 1965. I do not know why this should be, but it happened too often for coincidence to account for it. The line was adjacent to a sort of engineers yard and possibly was not accessible to visitors at that time. The ‘Radyr’ Photo. This photograph was indeed taken at Barry. 9466 is in the top yard in the position described above. The loco arrived at Barry complete with top feed cover and smokebox door handles, both of which are missing in this photograph. These fittings were still on the loco in May 1966, but had been removed by March 1968. The photograph must therefore have been taken after May 1966 but before autumn 1968 when 9466 was moved to the main yard. To see a 1966 photograph go to Dave Sallery’s website, just search for his name and you will find it. The picture of 9466 may not yet be captioned but I have recently identified all his Barry pictures for him. There are also photos of several other locos in the same line as 9466. The clincher for location is the pile of wood next to 9466. I have borrowed from a friend a photograph taken at Barry in March 1968. It shows 9466, myself and the same pile of wood as in the ‘Radyr’ photo. I also have a poor quality photo taken by myself on the same day which also shows 9466 and the pile of wood. The same hut is visible in the 1966 and ’Radyr’ photos but from different angles. The only puzzle is that 5668 is not obviously visible behind 9466, but from experience perspective can play funny tricks. 1975 Photo. This must date from 1975 since the loco is in the “going out yard” and 9466 was still in the main yard in March 1975 and left Barry that September. I hope that this information is helpful. We are indebted to Graham for this invaluable information and thank him for his permission to reproduce it here. Dave Sallery's Barry website that Graham refers to above also includes a picture of 9466 in Barry. Dave has very kindly allowed this picture to be reproduced below. Please note that the copyright for this shot remains totally with Dave and We thank him for his generousity. Keith Jones contacted me in September 2002 and gave the Group two photographs of 9466 that he had taken prior to it entering preservation. Keith has very kindly allowed me to reproduce the pictures on our website, for which we are very grateful. I must however remind everyone that the copyright for these pictures remains with the D.K.Jones Collection. Keith has a vast collection of railway photographs which are for sale and lists are available by contacting Keith Jones. This photo, Keith recalls, shows 9466 at Radyr in July 1964. If one looks carefully, the brake rigging can be seen lying on the ground having been recently gas axed off the loco. However Keith's recollection has caused a bit of confusion since we have seen other pictures of the loco at Barry scrapyard with the brake rigging lying on the ground under it. Help please! 9466 at Barry in 1975. This picture was probably taken at about the time of its purchase from Dai Woodham. Nice livery! We are always looking for good pictures of 9466 during her British Railways career. If anyone has any items that may be of interest to us, please get in touch with me via the link below. Thank you.
