SVR Boilersmith Dave Howell using a special long tap to cut the thread in the crown of the inner 'box. This tap ensures that the threads in the holes in the outer and inner 'boxes remain in line - 12 August 02.



Dave's long tap protrudes through the crown of the inner 'box. Note that there are two older crown stays still in situ. These were replaced at the last overhaul and show no signs of wear, so they are not being replaced this time round - 12 August 02.

The crown of the inner box. The new crown stays have been caulked and the nuts fitted but yet to be tighted. The stays either side of the chalk lines will be rivetted rather than fitted with nuts. Note the new fusible plugs - 13 August 02.



Camera poked in through the hole that the safety valves cover. The top of firebox tubeplate can be seen along with the main steam pipe at the top. The existing cross and longitudinal stays are seen but are outshone by the new crown stays - 13 August 02.



Firebox tubeplate showing some new copper stays fitted. The steel stays have had the old nuts removed and we were going to replace all 478 of them. Each stay thread had to be died down and a new nut, freshly created by Rog in the SVR machine shop, fitted - 11 August 02.
